Unfortunately, the ffmpeg team are notorious non-releasers. All the
docs, FAQs and mailing list replies default to "get latest CVS". And
that is indeed what many of the projects that use the ffmpeg libs do;
They check out the latest version at the time of their own release,
and include it in a subdir of their project. That also works around
the occasional API changes that a set of shared libs might have.
(There aren't too many, but it has happened.)

So my vote (not that I have one) would go to that approach, at least
until someone in the ffmpeg world steps up and starts making timely
releases.
