[Bf-committers] Makefile question

As I am exploring the possibilities for using an external library in
Blender I have a makefile question. If I were to use an external
library  such as expat for the parser where would be the proper place
to put it? does it belong in the lib directory outside of the blender
source directory or in extern or intern in the source directory or is
there some other totally different place it should go.
