Thanks, I wasn't aware of the fact that I can switch back to direct parenting 
with the IK button. Anyway, the task I had in mind was to connect an upper 
arm bone to the spine via a clavicle bone. Analogous to the mesh edit mode, I 
selected the tail of the spine and the root of the upper arm and pressed the 
FKey. Unfortunately this does not work. Instead I had to select the tail of 
the spine, extrude a clavicle, parent it to the upper arm, note the upper arm 
root location on a paper, press the IK button and reset the root location of 
the upper arm to the previous loctation. So yes, I propose the FKey as it's 
far more intuitive.
