That isn't quite true.

If you leave the soon-to-be endpoints fo the cure in the 'auto mode'
they are by default then you'll screw things up when you remove the
companion control points, but if you change the (not yet) end points to
"free mode" then everything goes perfectly fine.

I know coz I'm tired of doing it..  Check the image posted at
http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=201079 for an example.  Only 1/4
of the model is real, the other 3/4 are just virtual mirrors.  To cut
the curves at the right points without screwing the shape I had to use
the trick I just described.

The "true separate" comand would turn the endpoints into "free" before
doing the final cut.
