compiled against the Freetype version committed to the Blender CVS.
If it's no problem for you, i prefer to have the most recent version of the
Freetype Library in CVS.

Not really... you're mistaken with FTGL, which indeed is patched for 
Blender.
Freetype requires no patches, and I'm not really sure why it is added to 
CVS.
