also pocketpcs and many other pdas and mobile phones dont have gpus.

e.g. my phone, which runs on embedded linux, has even less cpu and ram than 
that .. iirc 48MB, dunno the specs of the ARM processor but some standard one 
i guess.. (this is a motorola a780)

and that one is 240 x 320 touch screen display, capable of displaying 65K 
colours.

crystal space has software rendering, no?
also mesa runs .. somewhat on cpu of course

regarding usability on a small screen, i think a basic thing is that you can 
only have one bigger blender window, preferably as the single one in 
fullscreen, and then some basic jobs must be straightforward .. which i think 
they already are, so am looking forward to getting a build done to get to 
test posing etc with the nice control bones and other mechanisms that 
armatures can have, probably ok with the stylus, .. and then shape widgets 
with the joystick of course :)
