Edge rotate is a more general tool, and is nice in some situations.

Sometimes when you know that you want the edge to be switched between 2 
tri's its faster just to join the 2 tri's and triangulate again.
Edge rotate can lead you on a merry trip, sometimes the edge gets stuck 
at some odd place making a concave quad, and wont budge.
