so windows vista's 'avalon' [shinyness engine] uses directx

while avalon is running windowed directx applications can run, but
opengl applications must either shut off avalon or use microsoft's
implementation of opengl which [now] is a wrapper for directx.

First: blender has worked with microsoft's old implementation of gl
1.1, and if anything this might be faster [cheaper graphics cards
implement direct3d more completely than gl it seems]

Second: this will not allow graphics card developers to simply plug in
their opengl drivers, avalon will still have to be turned off.

so what will windows vista look like with avalon off? what features
does it provide that are fundamental to the user experience?
