Hi,
I expect the fgons (face-gones!) will transform to real ngons in time.
So keeping it pure as actual polygons then saves headaches. Think of
having subdivide/bevel/knife working nicely with it.
ALso, what you mention about 'much cleaner' is a bit weird... the fgon
will hide it anyway, and blender renders the unclean faces as nice as
the clean version. :)
