Yuck :-P (I prefer one makefile per directory, so that one can type
'make' in every directory. I hop others do too).

Yes, I don't like this style. I want to see with what settings a file is
being compiled. But then again, I can imagine a lot of other people
don't, so for them it is a good idea. Why not have both ? Make it an
option.
Btw, have you seen my 'hmake' make wrapper tool ? It cleans up a lot,
and gives colour to important things.
