You have missed the point on two counts.

First, one of the principles of the blender interface
is one hand on the keyboard and the other on the
mouse.

Second,  the OOPS window is a browser.  The idea being
that you can root around in the data without messing
up any selections set in the 3dview.  If desired but
not required, using the existing ctrl-click you could 
change selections.

There has already been some discussion on enhancing the
OOPS window.  More features, such as parenting, are
nice enhancements.  There are reasons, however, that
proposed changes are usually accompanied by a proposal.
