The installation procedure for Blender is an ongoing story for years...

For example, Blender still doesn't run correctly if you don't start it
in the directory where you untarred it...

There are many possible ways to do this. The best thing would obviously
be a "make install" (or scons install) rule to place the files in the
appropriate places (~/.blender/, for instance, like instinctive-blender
does it).

Another solution would be that Blender simply finds out the directory
where the binary is in (trivial under UNIX), and then simply uses
paths relative to that.

Let's see what solution someone comes up with - I have given my opinions
on this topic already :)
