Addition:
Besides causing the toolbox to appear, could also go back a level in the
toolbox "menu". So if you hadn't gone into the "menu" (by pressing
Q,W,E,A,S,D or moving your mouse), space would exit the toolbox menu, but
otherwise it would just take you back to the previous level (i.e. not exit
the toolbox menu). Esc (or moving the mouse too much, etc) would still be
used to immediately exit the toolbox.
