Hm... probably not as root, but whatever account you're logging in as 
should be an "administrator" level one.

Not sure about server... hang on lemme check a 10.2.8 machine (my 
advice was from my recently-upgraded-to-10.3.1 laptop)...

Ah, here we go.

"Devices and Volumes" tab, look for turndown arrows for PCI or perhaps 
AGP. Since you're on a laptop it's possible that there'll be yet 
another turndown that will be for built-in graphics.

Under that turndown are the addresses of the various cards, turndown 
each of them. One or more should say "display" and give you info on 
what the manufacturer is and how much VRAM it has.
