OK, problem solved - I guess. It had to do with the vlr->ob pointer not
pointing to the right object sometimes. I guess this bug might exist in 
the official build, too, as I have heard a similar problem report today.

For now, removing the code that uses vlr->ob->col[3] to calculate alpha
for render faces fixes it.
