Is it such that a find/replace script of some sort in
emacs/perl/similar could help with the transition?

Naturally afterwards you'd want to generate a patch
file and scroll through making sure all the merges are
appropriate.  (Which may not take as much work as
thought... a long sleepless night by anyone who knows
the code well enough might be able to accomplish most
of it all at once.)
