the guessconfig stuff uses irix-6.5-mips which gets put into 
/tmp/.nanguess

i pick 'irix-6.5-mips', which the old build systems uses by default.
since i want to build the old system, it should remain functional.

the 'something shorter' should belong to the autoconf build system.
