OpenAL is a mess, especially the version last used in Blender.
Maybe it's better now? Worth checking out...

Anyway, it isn't wise to 'fix' too much stuff in OpenAL. Best is to put 
patches right were they're needed, and not in higher level include files 
or C(++) files.

Best is, except for Windows, to disable sound completely by default. 
Until someone gets it working properly in Linux, it shouldn't block the 
autoconf release.
