For multiple columns it starts to become unclear what widget each label refers to.</div><div>For 2.5 we were at some point discussing moving to a single column layout, and this would have made many things in the UI easier to read, and made it much easier to do layouts, too.</div><div><br></div><div>The reason we went away from that idea was because the user is then required to scroll up or down a lot more to see all settings, and you can only see half as many items at a glance.</div><div><br></div><div>Additionally, text outside makes the widgets, and also hit targets, smaller. For sliders you also get less precision.</div><div><br></div><div><br></div><div>Now, with that said, your middle option looks like a good compromise.
