It just occurred to me that what needs to happen to the IPO curve editor is for it to take on some functionality of the outliner, This way on one side would be a list of objects and the curves that are attached to them and on the other would be the actual curves themselve which would become visible if the object is selected whether it's in the 3D view, outliner, or the outliner-like IPO curve editor itself.
