Just did it, heres a quickly-written, sloppy horrible mini-tutorial:

1. Create a spot light, a plane (floor) and a halo object to be
shadow-ified.

2. Create a Copy Rotation and Copy Location constraints for the camera.

3. Have the constraints point to the spotlight (the camera should now be
looking the same direction as the light).

4. Turn the halo's color to black.

5. Put the halo object in it's own layer and set the world background to
white.

6. Render, and save the image as shadowbuff.jpg (or whatever you want).

7. Add a image texture to the materials of all the object near the
halo. Load shadowbuff.jpg. Enable UseAlpha, CalcAlpha and NegAlpha.

8. In the materials Map To section, click the Object Map-To button and
have the image map to the spotlight. Next, set sizex, sizey and sizez
to something small like 0.15 (not sure why this is necassary).

7. Render away! The halos now have shadows! See attached image.
