You can convert to meshes at any point. Beziers give you a lot of control
with minimum control points - both for the profile and for the control path.
What advantages do you have by using meshes directly?

But that only works for curves, I think the proposal also included
meshes

You can already use any curve as the profile shape of any other curve.
Just
put the name of the profile curve in the 'BevOb:' space of the path
guide.
