No, it wast't new type of curve, it  was a new edit behaviour in IPO curves. 
If the "Ease-In" was selected, then it would automatically snap a 
control point's handle to "Horizontal" (forcing it to be a local minima or 
maxima) if the Y value of the points on either side were either both higher 
or both lower.  It would be recalculated as a regular bezier point if it was 
on a constant upward or downward part of a curve.

This preserves backwards compatibility since it involves no new types and 
preserves forward compatability since the points are only adjusted after an 
edit (and for older revs, this option would default to "off").
