Hello, my name is Peter Romero. I have worked in media arts and technology<br>
for over 30 years, and concur with my colleague Achim Harhoff. I now run<br>
a nonprofit called, "Leonardo's Apprentice," and teach science, engineering<br>
and the Arts as a complete program. We are not STEM or STEAM, although we<br>
do work to similar goals. For years I taught media production, everything<br>
from storyboarding to post production at the secondary level. I focused<br>
more on the art of photography and filming. In the senior year, the<br>
student's capstone project was to make a 5 minute video. The students<br>
would always ask, "That's it? Only 5-minutes? What are we going to do for<br>
the rest of the year?" Well, interesting enough, writing a script, making<br>
a storyboard, finding actors and locations, rehearsing actors, learning<br>
about lighting, sound (including foley), and blender barely got them to the<br>
end. They had to model a 3d object that would have to be placed into their<br>
film, during editing. It was supposed to blend in as part of a scene like<br>
their green screen scenes. Anyway, it was fun and now several of the<br>
students are in the industry as directors, editors, lighting, and even<br>
writing. I have to agree with Ton, certification just means you know the<br>
technology but the real skill being hired is seeing results as an artist in<br>
the field. One of my friends who works for the DisneyImagineers told me<br>
that when they hire an artist they don't want to see the interviewee's best<br>
three pictures but 50 images showing from beginning to present. Why? They<br>
are looking for progression and improvement--in short, a person who is<br>
showing growth in the art. If I can help, let me know. Peter<br>
