Well, the 'old' doc has some instructions

and subsequent pages :) a Style guide for images is there too.

My workflow, in similar cases is:

1 open blender from command line
   imposing a screen size of 1280x1024
  (i.e. blender -p 1 1 1280 1024)

  be sure to have the *default* .B.blend file and the default theme

  this ensure consistency

2 Use CTRL-F3 and SHIFT-CTRL-F3 whenever possible
   to save screens

3 Save them as PNG, use your favourite paint program
  to add highlights and notes, these shoiud be pure yellow (#FFFF00)
  crop as needed :)
