with the file from BA, i obtain the following scores:
on 1st machine, with Blender build 43239 and 53252 (cuda) ( w7600k @3.4GhZ, 16GB RAM, 2xGTX470, nvidia 285whql, win7 64):
<big>* 35,82 secs with MULTIGPU</big> ( 2x gtx470)
<big>* 53,52 secs with 1 GTX470</big> ( whatever the pciexpress 4x or 16x)
There's something strange: <b>the rendered</b> <b>picture is black and white</b>
on the second machine, with Blender build 43098 (cuda) ( AMD 1090T @ 3.6 gHz, 6GB RAM, 1x GTX285 2gB, nvidia 285whql, win7 64):
<big>* 2 min 27 secs</big>
BUT <b>THE PICTURE IS COLORED</b> ( with light glow)
Another strange thing: when rendering with command line, <b>the new multigpu versions are very very slow </b>( much more than when hitting CTRL F12 )
last thing, does exist <b>a command ( command line rendering ) for specify what GPU we want to use </b>?

You were right, Thomas, about the GTX of the same generation...
i didn't have the time actually to test other scenes but perhaps results
will be better (because this one has a lot of bitmap mapping...)

thanks for the info but apparently the 43233 build didnt' have this
option.
Just intalled the last build 43239 and this one has this menu. But:
when i choose 'GTX470 and GTX285', rendertime is 15.23 secs
whith only GTX470 selected, it takes only 10.2 secs...
sure it will be improvments for future versions... anyway thanks again
for this exeptionnal work.

yes it's inside the User Preferences. Go to the system tab there, there
is the Compute Device setting.
Choose CUDA and then in the drop down beneath which card(s) to use.
