I think of hiding the cursor as in "it is there and active, but not shown"
Disabling the cursor would be hard, but telling OpenGL not to draw it might be a bit easier.

This would work with my proposal, but it could be very confusing. In this case I would suggest to unhide the cursor if a user switches to "zoom to cursor" or if he is in this mode and zooms.
