The "magic" chroot is a standard debian 4.0 (stable) system (at least for PPC,
I can't speak for x86 or amd64). Using kvm or any other virtualisation
systems to build blender is fine, however chroots have served their purpuse
quite well up until now and I don't see a need for change.
