You can also add a toggle to enable/disable subsurf modifier to a layer,
always for faster the opengl display.
For the display of the layer system, perhaps have the panel or like the Oops
window, where there is an option to show only the layer with object or all
layer, with a system like the Oops window, when all node is collapsed all
options are shown with an icon when uncollapsed, we can change all option
easly.

But for now, I will keep my enthusiasm and cross my finger to have this
project accepted, if you present it.
