Just tested... 124,000 verts in 1 mesh only used 78 meg of memory and it 
didnt run that slow (assume an older PC would still be useable)
So if there is 10,000.. assume 20,002 verts. its not so many.
Also, you have to click OK. unlike subsurf where you can pick a high num 
without meaning to.

looks safe to me.
