In contrary, I've created
- generic modifier stacks for lattice/curve/surface/mesh
- a generic object type independent softbody system that can hook into
each of the stacks.

Code examples are for Mesh and Lattice only now. But in theory it can
even hook up to Armatures.
Using the Effects system makes it Mesh only per definition.

Design for softbody was based on specs found in the maya manual, to
ensure a good integration with animation systems and future proof
expansion. I found myself incapable of defining the right physicis
rules and developing a reliable simulation/evaluation system. For that
part Jens is coding right now. After we have our update release out I
will help on further integrating in the Blender and UI side.

Of course it's worth checking on what Alexander coded, but not as an
option but to verify optimal solutions.
