without trying myself, what doesn't irix cp like about the -a option?
it seems to be defined. 

" The -a option to cp will copy user mode XFS attributes, the option 
is silently ignored if any of the files involved is not on an XFS
 filesystem."

sgi126 8% cp -aR lib /tmp
sgi126 9% 

sgi126 9% which cp
/usr/bin/cp
